A sense of restriction is one of the main obstacles in any attempt to get healthy.
The idea of having to suffer to achieve your goal is not too appealing. In the case of dieting, the idea of having to endure months or years on tiny portions is a mental block that many find difficult to overcome.
So how do we get over this problem?
My brother James and I often discuss diet and health issues. His friend and his friend’s wife wanted to lose some weight, so he mentioned the ideas in this article and thought nothing more of it…
A couple of months went by and when he saw his friend again — what a shock! Looked like a different guy. And what’s more, his friend said it was so easy to do. It really is a simple concept. His wife? Same story…
So what did they do? Here’s the background…
Our human ancestors only 10,000 years ago were built like athletes. Strong, tall, muscular, low body fat. Ok they didn’t live very long but times were very tough in those days. :-)
So where did it all go wrong? In a word — agriculture. We exchanged a hunter-gatherer lifestyle for crops, and started adding grains and dairy foods into our diet.
And from then ’til now, things have become steadily worse. We process our food in more and more bizarre ways to increase not health, but profit and shelf life. These are the two most important considerations for the manufacturers.
Genetically speaking we are built for fruits, vegetables and other plant bits, nuts, seeds, and animal foods — stuff that can be taken from nature directly.
Apart from nuts and seeds the foods here have a low calorie density and a high nutrient density. That means we get to eat ’til we’re full without putting on weight. When you put something in your mouth it’s good to ask yourself…
“Could I get this directly from nature?”
It should come as no big surprise that nature didn’t get it wrong and give us instincts that make us overweight and unhealthy. Like any other animal on our beautiful planet, we are designed to eat what’s in nature directly.
Any move away from that is bound to be a bad idea. The simple answer is to eat naturally. Replace foods that have a high calorie density with fruits and vegetables.
The scientific journals are heaving with research on the benefits of fruits and veg. There is nothing clearer in the whole field of nutrition than the simple fact we should be eating more fruit and veg.
Fruits and veggies have a high water content and this helps us to feel full in the natural way. The staple grain is not a natural food for us, so replace bread and grain with fruits and veg… a very simple idea that works wonders.
So, when you want to lose weight, you don’t need to imagine years of eating tiny portions, get into fruits and veggies and FILL YOUR PLATE!
On natural foods, it’s very difficult to overeat. Your instincts will return. If the thought of it is not appealing, don’t worry — just use the system in Habit Guide to take baby steps in the right direction. Once you give your body the right foods you will start to love the new way.
When you eat this way and see your plate piled up with colorful fruits, veggies and natural protein you’ll be in no doubt that it’s right… It looks right, it tastes right and it feels right!
