Here’s my favorite “habit” quote of all time.
In fact it takes pride of place in Habit Guide.
Drum roll please…
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.”
None other than the great philosopher Aristotle said that.
Another of my favorite sayings is “Once you know something, you see it everywhere.” You know, I’d never come across the Aristotle quote before writing Habit Guide, or at least I wasn’t aware of it.
I’m now “hyper” aware of habit, and the fact that it’s the underlying force behind all the outcomes in our lives.
So… “Habits ‘R’ Us,” and I don’t think any other definition comes closer. OK if you’re a spiritual person, you may realize that who you are is ultimately beyond conditioning (habit). But I’m talking about what drives our actions and thoughts day in, day out—enlightened or not!
Even the Buddha had plenty to say about habits… oh yes. I may get to that in another post but if there’s one single take away to learn about habits it’s that “Habits ‘R’ Us”—we are what we repeatedly do.
You might not like or even agree with that definition. I must admit, it takes quite a lot of reflection to see the truth of it. But like I said… “Once you know something you see it everywhere,” and now you’re aware of habit as a major player in your life, I guarantee you’ll start to see it. And after a while and some reflection, I believe that you’ll also see the truth of it.
Even our thoughts are dominated by habit! They are mainly “reactions” and therefore belong to the realm of conditioning. This conditioning is the major player but if you want to go deeper, you have to go beyond conditioning altogether. But THAT is a whole other story.
I hurt for 13 years. It was hell... torture... feeling very bad for a very long time. And that had a devastating effect on every aspect of my life.
With the little energy and focus I had, I hunted for answers. In fact I spent twenty YEARS trawling for answers. You can just imagine the trying, and stumbling, the desperation and frustration...
But now I've seen BOTH extremes of life... from wanting to die every day to the joy of health and happiness. The truth is that all my suffering drives me with a passion to help you not to suffer. Why I can't say, because it's just there, in me.
So don't make the same mistakes I did. Life is too short... I want you to feel good without falling into the pitfalls. I have this knowledge now and I would love you to have it.
