Thank you John. Yes great to get your "PhD" opinion and I agree with all you said there. Science does NOT yet have all the answers because science is "what you do when you don't know what you're doing." :-)

Was happy to hear your view on fruit and serotonin... I instinctively felt that was correct. And logically too, since it seems to me that fruit should predominate in a human diet.

I believe that science will eventually grind out the truth that really needed no evidence... we are a product of nature and must look to nature to figure out the optimal lifestyle that our GENES are exquisitely adapted to.

Thanks again John... very much appreciated.

I take a fair amount of issue with a lot that was said in this piece. I have a PhD in medicinal chemistry...if that adds any weight to my comments.

Let's start with fruit. The sugars in fruit absolutley 100% do increase brain serotonin levels.

I agree with Judith's here: "Common sense and listening to one’s body goes a long way when deciding how and what to eat."

I'd add that it goes EVEN further than current science...why not combine the best of both. Use the science in combination with your own experimentation to arrive at your truth?

Based on that I'd like to challenge anyone to go on a fruit only diet for 7 days and then report back as to your mood. I guarantee it will be better.

In fact I'll go as far as to say that this: Judith I personally don't believe you have a very good handle on your husbands research.

For one you are completely missing that fact that some tryptophan is actively transported into the brain. Prove it to your self. Take 3 grams of Tryptophan before bed tonight an no other carbs.

The basic data that your husband, AND MANY OTHERS, have looked at says that it's the ratio of amino acids that is important for the benefits of the active transport. Again simply take a tryptophan pill alone and you will feel the effects or take phenylalanine (precursor to dopamine) and tell me you don't notice a substantial increase in energy and probably mood.

The science that is being done here is good, but it's so far from complete that anyone pretending to be an all out expert in this field should be questioned extensively.

For others reading this, if you want to improve your mood then I suggest you take the advise of the person performing the interview in this article. Drop farm raised meat from you diet immediately and start eating fresh fruits and vegetables everyday. Try to eat as much raw as possible.

One last thing. If you are really depressed I recommend a 3 day juice fast followed by whole food diets. On the fourth day when you wake up after fasting you will feel phenomenal. ease back into food with fruit only for the fourth day.

One last point. Depression and mood is JUST as much dependant upon habit as anything else. Have you been negative your whole life? Well when you feel off a little bit you will likely turn negative because those old pathways take less energy to traverse than the new happy pathway's you are trying to learn.

I think for oh say 99% of cases we need to completely do away with anti dpressants. It's time to start educating Americans about basic health issues like diet and meditation. It's time for American's to quit seeking the so called simple solution to everything.
